The Hungarian-born architect Marcel Breuer (1902-81) rose to prominence as a student under Walter Gropius at the Bauhaus, and became a master as head of the furniture workshop. He emigrated to the United States in 1937, where he taught at Harvard University, influencing a generation of practitioners. As the head of his own firm, Breuer became known for designs as diverse and powerful as the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the UNESCO headquarters in Paris and the iconic 'Wassily' chair -- the first chair to use tubular steel, which revolutionized the furniture industry. Breuer, like many architects who work simultaneously on small- and large-scale commissions, used residential architecture as a laboratory for all of his design ideas. Not only is the quality and quantity of Breuer's residential output impressive, but when it is seen in sequence one can perceive a development of his spatial mastery and expertise.Because of their interplay of spaces and daring juxtaposition of materials, Breuer's houses have had a profound influence on residential architecture around the world and upon generations of young designers. This monograph is a comprehensive study of Breuer's house designs from 1923 to 1973. Richly illustrated with drawings, plans and archival photography, the book provides insight to the working methods of a key architectural figure of the twentieth century.

Written in accord with the Catechism of the Catholic Church and rooted in the sound catechetical principles of the National Catechetical Directory, these texts present a well-defined curriculum model that stresses clear objectives, careful organization, and creative methods and evaluation procedures to check the attainment of goals. Very flexible, allowing teachers to select materials to highlight and stress, each text can be implemented on various grade levels for a quarter, a semester, or a full year depending on the length and frequency of class meetings. The approach to studying and comparing religion taken by Nancy Clemmons, SNJM is to expand an ever-widening circle that begins with the teen's understanding of their own religious roots.Beginning with Judaism and Christianity, Clemmons widens the circle further to discuss first another major monotheistic faith (Islam) before turning to other ancient religions of the world (Hinduism, Sikism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, and Shintoism) that have reemerged in various forms in North America today. Clemmons returns full circle to explore a variety of religious traditions that sprung from America's Protestant roots including Mormonism, Jehovah's Witness, and the Church of Christ, Scientist.A brief history (including information on the founder and other major figures), scripture or other major writings, beliefs and practices, and sacred spaces and sacred times are included as part of the study of each religion. Clemmons also shows how each religion impacts North America today, and how North Americans impact these religions through the inclusion of personal profiles that describe situations where the religion has likely alreadyintersected with the teen's own experiences.

Andrew Jackson Higgins and the Boats That Won World War II, by Jerry E. Strahan, is the first biography of perhaps the most forgotten hero of the Allied victory. It was Higgins who designed the LCVP (landing craft vehicle, personnel) that played such a vital role in the invasion of Normandy, the landings in Guadalcanal, North Africa, and Leyte, and thousands of amphibious assaults throughout the Pacific. It was also Higgins who, after twenty years of failure by the U.S. Navy's Bureau of Ships, designed and constructed an effective tank landing craft in sixty-one hours - a feat that caused the bureau to despise him. In 1938, Higgins owned a single small boatyard in New Orleans employing fewer than seventy-five people. Through exceptional drive, vision, and genius, his holdings expanded until by late 1943 he owned seven plants and employed more than twenty thousand workers. Because of his reputation for designing and producing assault craft in record-breaking time, Higgins was awarded the largest shipbuilding and aircraft contracts in history. During the war, Higgins Industries produced 20,094 boats, ranging from the 36-foot LCVP to the lightning-fast PT boats; the rocket-firing landing craft support boats; the 56-foot tank landing craft; the 170-foot FS ships; and the 27-foot airborne lifeboat that was dropped from the belly of a B-17 bomber. Higgins dedicated himself to providing Allied soldiers with the finest landing craft in the world, and he fought the Bureau of Ships, the Washington bureaucracy, and the powerful eastern shipyards in order to succeed. Strahan's portrait of Higgins reveals a colorful character - a hard-fisted, hard-swearing, and hard-drinking man whose Irishbackground and Nebraska birthplace made him an outsider to New Orleans' elite social circles. Higgins was also hard working, quickly progressing from an unknown southern boatbuilder to a major industrialist with a worldwide reputation.

The author of this extraordinary book uses a mixture of case studies, examples and quotations to illustrate some hard facts. She looks at women across the world to show how their lives have been turned upside down, by industrialization in the South and a return to homeworking in the North. From New York to Phnom Penh, from Moscow to Dakar, we see the devastating effects of the unfettered power of transnational corporations on women's lives.

An enormous popular success when first published in 1956, this monumental four-volume set -- fifteen years in the making -- reveals the sweeping scope of mathematics, the richness of its ideas and the multiplicity of its aspects. In the editor's words, "It presents mathematics as a tool, a language and a map; as a work of art and as an end in itself; as a fulfillment of the passion for perfection". Specially designed to make mathematics more accessible to the layman, the work comprises non-technical essays on every aspect of the subject, including articles by and about scores of eminent mathematicians as well as literary figures, economists, biologists and many other thinkers. Contributors include Archimedes, Galileo, Descartes, Newton, Gregor Mendel, Edmund Halley, Jonathan Swift, John Maynard Keynes, Henri Poincare, Lewis Carroll, George Boole, Bertrand Russell, Alfred North Whitehead, John von Neumann and many others. Each essay is preceded by an informative commentary by noted mathematics scholar James R. Newman, explaining its relevance and context in the history and development of mathematics. The Dover edition will be the only edition in print of this remarkable resource. While it is sure to be warmly welcomed by mathematicians, students and teachers of mathematics, the book's wealth of fascinating facts, abundance of anecdotes and general accessibility to non-mathematicians will make it of great interest to general readers as well. Each of the volumes includes an index and can stand alone as a fascinating collection of essays in its own right, so readers with a particular interest in any of the topics can purchase the volume of their choice. As a complete set, the work isunsurpassed in its breadth and diversity and many individuals, as well as libraries and institutions, will want to own the complete set.Volume II (Parts V-VII) covers mathematics and the physical world, mathematics and social science, and the laws of chance.
